Profile

Dr. Ossama Abdallah is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with 30 years of experience in his field. He is specialized in Sports Medicine and Traumatology and Arthroscopic Surgeries of the Hip joint, Knee and Shoulder

Dr. Abdallah has worked in Denmark, Sweden, United Kingdom and various healthcare institutions in the UAE.

Arthroscopy of Hip, Knee and Shoulder

Arthroscopy is a procedure which involves investigation of the area of treatment with the help of a small tool known as arthroscope. It is a surgical procedure which allows doctor to see the joints without making large incisions and treat through the skin and soft tissues, allowing the orthopaedic doctor to diagnose the cause of pain in patient’s joints. The orthopaedic surgery repairs the tissues inside and outside the joints.

Arthroscopic Hip Surgery

Hip Arthroscopy is minimal invasive hip surgery which treats intra and extra- articular disorders of hip diseases. This treatment is taken into consideration when hip pain treatments without surgery such as injections and infusion, hip pain medications, sports physical therapy and change in lifestyle does not prove to be beneficial. In this, the hip is pulled gently away from the socket, making enough space for the surgeon to insert the arthroscope, allowing him to see the entire joint and perform the required treatment. Some of the procedures are:

Some hip pain can be experienced after the surgery but it is natural and part of healing process. Short term pain relievers will be prescribed by the doctor to ease the pain and reduce the inflammation.

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

Knee joint pain can be treated with an effective knee surgery often known as "scoping the knee" or knee arthroscopy.

Knee Arthroscopy is a surgical treatment which diagnosis knee pain problems, like torn meniscus or misaligned patella (kneecap), patella that’s out of position, removal of Baker’s cyst, fractures in knee bones and helps in repairing the ligaments of joints

Small incisions are made in the area of treatment which makes it easier for the surgeon to see inside the knee joint with the help of arthroscope. Surgeon can see the images produced by the camera on the monitor in the operating room.

Knee pain causes can vary from individual to individual according to their body type, lifestyle and work profile. For example, knee pain symptoms will be different for an obese man and an athlete. Hence, knee arthroscopy is not an exclusive knee pain treatment

There are limited risks of the knee surgery and the recovery time depends on the severity of the knee problem.

Exercises to reduce the knee pain and strengthen the muscles surrounding the knees are suggested by physical therapist. Walking, cycling, yoga, water exercise, neuromuscular training are few among those.

Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery

Shoulder arthroscopy is usually recommended when non-surgical shoulder pain treatments do not respond. Shoulder arthroscopy relieves the painful symptoms of many shoulder problems that damage rotator cuff tendons, labrum, articular cartilage, and other soft tissue surrounding the joint and causes shoulder pain.

Fluid is injected into the shoulder to inflate the joint, making it easier for the orthopaedic surgeon to see all structure of the shoulder with the help of arthroscope. After the identification of problem, specialized instruments are used for shaving, cutting, grasping, suture passing and knot tying.

Shoulder arthroscopy has turned out as an effective shoulde

Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Treatment

Shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff tendons and labrum are common in athletes.

The shoulder pain associated with rotator cuff tear is usually at the front and side of the shoulder or upper arm, and have aching and burning quality.

With the help of shoulder arthroscopy, the rotator cuff tear is identified and loose, degenerated and frayed tissue around the cuff edge is removed back to healthy tissue. The tear is fixed into place using specialized suture.

Arthroscopic ACL Reconstructions

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the four major knee ligaments.

ACL Reconstructive Surgery is type of ligament operation that uses graft to replace the ligament with a piece of tendon from another part of the patients knee or from a deceased donor. The most common grafts are tendons of the knee cap (patellar tendon) or the hamstring tendons.

Usually, two or three incisions are made around the knee and with the help of arthroscope the area of treatment is investigated by an orthopaedic surgeon.

Surgical drills are inserted in the small incisions and holes are made in upper or lower leg bones near the knee joint. The holes act as tunnels through which the grafts are anchored. Broken bones, knee ligaments and other injured part of the knee can be repaired by ACL knee surgery

One of the prime advantages of ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is to restore knee stability that will help to prevent secondary injuries like menisci and articular cartilage.

Arthroscopic Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) treatment

Femoroacetabular impingement is a common cause of hip pain in young people and athlete. Arthroscopic surgery is undertaken into consideration in unmanageable cases involving targeted physiotherapy and oral anti-inflammatory drugs.

Sports and Trauma Injuries

No matter how careful an athlete is on the field or in physical exercises, he is likely to experience a traumatic or overuse injury at some point of time. Sprain and strain, fractures, dislocations, MCL and ACL tears, rotators cuff and tendon injuries are some common sports injuries.

Sports and trauma injuries can be easily treated by the arthroscopic treatment.

Prevention, surgical and rehabilitation principles allow orthopaedic sports surgeons to take good care of the athletes and help them to return to their regular sport practices. Orthopaedic sports medicine focuses on managing pathological conditions of the musculoskeletal system arising from sports practice.

Dr. Ossama Abdallah has done case study on anatomical reconstruction of Medical collateral Ligament and Posteromedial Corner of the knee in patients with chronic medial collateral ligament instability which delt with the case of multiple ligament injury (MCL). He is an expert in orthopaedic sports medicine and one of the best sports surgeon found in UAE.

Adam Vital Hospital is an established Orthopaedic Hospital in Dubai providing you with best orthopaedic doctors, sports surgeons and sports medicine.
